Roulette wheels in Europe have thirty-seven slots representing the numbers 0 through 36. American roulette wheels have thirty-eight slots with the same numbers plus another zero. The game starts after the players buy-in with different colored chips. This keeps the bets from getting mixed up. After buying in, you can’t get money back without leaving the game to cash in your chips.

The first bets are made in the game when players place their chips on any number, including the zeros. Once everyone has a chance to place a bet, the croupier starts the spin and drops the ball onto the wheel. Just before the ball lands on a spot, the croupier calls out that there are no more bets. The ball lands in a spot and the croupier places a dolly on the winning number. He then clears off the board of any losing bets and settles the winning bets. Once the board is clear, the players can then place new bets for the next round of spinning.

The house has a significant advantage on a double zero roulette table, accounting for 5.26% advantage. Players should always keep this in mind as they play their bets and prepare for each round of play. The best bets for beginners in roulette are those bets that have a fifty-fifty chance of paying out. For example, betting on an odd or even number or perhaps red or black will likely be for fun for the starting players as there are more opportunities to win.

This system recoups losses and it offers a small win, but it can only work in two conditions. One, you have to bet on a color, not a number, and you have to be at a table that can accommodate the doubling bets.

Doubling up works almost exactly as it sounds. If you were to bet $10 on red on the first spin, you’d lost $10 when the ball lands on black. So then you put $20 on red for the next spin – you’ve doubled up. Then, if you lose again, you put $40 on red. If you win that time, you’ve won $40 – $30 of which you lost in the first two spins leaving you winnings of $10.

Since every spin of the wheel has the same likelihood of red and black, you can easily butt against a table limit quickly if you get on a losing streak. For example, that same $10 bet can quickly reach $100 or $200 if you continue to lose. If you hit a maximum bet of $100 and still lose, you can’t go on to $200 and you’ve lost your money.

If you’re going to try doubling up, be sure to find a table that can accommodate even your biggest losing streak so that you can come out ahead. When you do come out ahead, don’t be surprised if you wind up with only $10 to claim in actual winnings.

Skip the System – Once you’ve played countless games and have money to burn, you can try out different systems to see what works for you. Right now, however, play and have fun making moderate, even safe, bets to manage your money and enjoy the game without the headaches. As you become a more experienced player and have a bigger bankroll, you’re welcome to enjoy as many systems as you like – a trial and error is another way to have fun with roulette, in fact.

Consistent Betting Is Key – It’s fun to put down chips or coins where you want on each spin, but it’s important to remember that each spin of the wheel resets the board , so playing all over the place will actually decrease your chances of winning and possibly waste your money. It’s better to play the same bets over and over again statistically, at least. Granted, it’s not as much fun as going with your gut, but who can argue with safety?

Start with Even Money Bets – How romantic is it to wager everything you have on #7? Realistically, however, your 35/1 payout isn’t going to happen. Instead you’re going to lose all of your money and cut your night very short indeed. To preserve your money and make the night a bit longer and more entertaining, make even money bets like red or black, low or high. Those bets might not pay out huge amounts, but you still get the joy of winning and plenty of money to keep the fun going.

The good news is that, even though French roulette is not one of the most popular games offered at casinos, we have moved far from the days in which the only way to play the game was going to France or the Monte Carlo. That is why in this post I want to talk about what makes French roulette different from other variations of the game so that if you ever run across it you will not feel entirely lost.

French roulette comes with the single-zero roulette wheel, the La Partage rule, the Call Bets, and those features make it different from the other versions of roulette. The first thing that stands out is that all the numbers on the table are red, this is just because the French like the design but it does not mean anything. The numbers alternate in red and black, so you still can place a bet on the color.

The French roulette table is, naturally, in French. If you are planning to play you should get familiar with some basic French terms that I will post later this week. The French roulette only comes with one zero, like the European roulette which means you have a higher chance of winning than in American roulette.

Some online casinos do offer French Roulette but as a single game and this has a lot to do with the house edge and the average return of the game. The three variants of roulette offer very different returns. For those who are not familiar with the term house edge, the simplest definition is that it is the percent of each wager that the casino expects to get as winnings. From this concept you can understand that the higher the house edge, the more the casino profits.

Whereas American and European roulette offer a 5.26% and 2.70% house edge, respectively, French roulette only offers a 1.35% house return on even money bets and a 2.70% on all other bets. However, if we think about it, some casinos offer some variants of Blackjack and Video Poker with house edges of less than 1%.

The difference is that Roulette is a game purely based on luck and so, in the long run, the house will always get its return. In blackjack and video poker there is a skill factor and the issue is that even though the house edge is only 0.5%, this involves that the player uses perfect strategy and that is rarely the case. As a result, the house can expect returns of almost 10%.

There lies the issue why French Roulette poses the least attractive option for casino owners and they prefer to keep it away from the players as much as they can. However, I encourage you t try the game as it is a lot of fun. I will try to post more information on it later on the week. Happy grinding!

3. Keno. Keno is probably the worst games for players who seek a return for their money. The house edge in keno is between 25% and 35%. If you play keno, be aware that this should be done purely for fun.
4. Scratch Cards. The functionality of scratch cards are pretty similar to that of a progressive jackpot. You could hit the big the big prize in one game and make lots of money, but the chances of this happening are terribly slim. Even though there is no entirely accurate way to compute the house edge for scratch cards, empiric testing has proven that there is not a lot of money in this game.
5. Side Bets. In Blackjack there is the possibility to opt for side bets. My recommendation is that you stay away from those ALL THE TIME. As I said in the last post, Blackjack is a game with great odds but the side bets have terrible odds and will almost never bring any returns of your money.

These are the five games that gamblers who want to look after their bankroll should stay away from as they do not offer great returns. I hope this helped clarify the topic a bit and please start suggesting topics for next week right now!

Just to be a little clearer, the house edge refers to the advantage that the house (i.e. the casino) has in a game. This means that if the house edge is 1%, there is a chance that you will lose $1 for every $100 bet.

The games that I recommend to players who want to increase their bankroll and make more money are the following:

1. Blackjack: This game has the lowest house edge of all casino games and it is 0.5%. The key to Blackjack is knowing the basic strategy upside down.
2. European Roulette: Unlike American Roulette, European Roulette only comes with one zero, reducing the house edge to a 2.7%.
3. Craps: This game also has one of the lowest house edges and it is 1.41%. Craps is actually a lot easier to play than what it looks and if you want to make money you might want to try it.
4. Baccarat. This is a very popular game as the house edge is only 1.63% and it offers great returns.
5. Pai Gow: Some players avoid Pai Gow as it can seem rather complicated but it is a goldmine with a house edge of 2.73% if you are the player and 0.20% if you are the banker. Combined, the house edge is 1.46%.

Those are the games that I recommend you start playing if you want to make some decent money at your favorite casino. Sometimes online casinos offer variations of these games with different odds, so you should be attemptive and make sure you are playing the original version of them.

Now that we have seen how all of these different systems work, we put 2 of the most popular ones to the test- the Reverse Labouchere System and the Martingale System. Can they really break the bank?  Let’s Find Out!

The Reverse Labouchere Roulette System

Of these systems, the most famous is probably the Reverse Labouchere system.  This system was used by Norman Leigh and 12 companions to break the bank of the Casino Municipale in Nice back in 1966.  This true story was later chronicled in the book “Thirteen Against the Bank”, written by Norman Leigh.  Check out the book on Amazon.

Norman claims that the system alone was the key to his resounding roulette success.  In fact, Norman and his cohorts won so much money that they were banned from all casinos in France for the rest of their lives.  The story in the book has driven many a gambler to use the Reverse Labouchere system to try and beat the house.  It worked for Norman, but can it really make you millions of dollars at the roulette table?

The Martingale Roulette System

The Martingale Roulette System is perhaps the most commonly used betting system in all of gambling.  Its simplicity, promises of winnings at the end of every round, and its ability to be applied to bets in a variety of different games has lead to its enormous popularity.  But does it really win you money at the roulette table?

Testing The Roulette Systems

To test the roulette systems, we will be using a roulette simulator developed by Woodger Computing.  James Woodger was kind enough to let us use his company’s software for the purposes of this test.

To really put these systems to the test, we are using the following methodology:

• Each roulette system will go through 10,000,000 simulated spins to ensure a good sample size.
• The simulated table limit will be $10,000.  This is rather high, but it gives the systems a chance to work, and these limits CAN be found in the high roller rooms at many casinos.
• The simulations will use the North American rules (the table has both 0 and 00 green squares on the roulette wheel). Using these rules, the house advantage is 5.26%

Without further ado, let’s put these roulette systems to the test!

Reverse Labouchere Roulette System Results

As we can see from the graphic above, using the Reverse Labouchere Roulette System over 10,000,000 spins produced results (4.97% loss) only slightly above the house advantage of 5.26%.  Based on these results, the famous Reverse Labouchere Roulette System should not win the player any money over the long run.

Martingale Roulette System Results

After 10,000,000 spins, it appears that the Martingale Roulette System performed worse than the Reverse Labouchere System AND worse than the normal house advantage, coming in at a lose rate of 5.61%.  After 10 million spins, starting with a $5 bet, you would lose a total of close to $20 million according to the simulation!  You also would have wagered over $341 million, so I guess $20 mil isn’t that bad if you have this kind of money to burn.

Finally, lets take a look at what would happen if we made a straight bet of $5 on every spin using no system whatsoever.  According to the laws of statistics, we should come extremely close to, if not directly on, the house advantage of 5.26%.

Straight Roulette Bet Results

As expected, over the long term, the straight roulette bets end up losing at a rate of 5.25%, extremely close to the predicted 5.26%.  According to the simulation, simply making straight $5 bets will beat the Martingale System, but lose out to the Labouchere System.

According to these simulations, none of the systems can beat the casino.  However, the big limitation of the Martingale System is the maximum bet allowed on the table.  If a player has basically infinite money, and an extremely high table limit, would he be able to beat the casino over the long term?  Lets find out!

Martingale System No Restrictions Results

To test how much of an effect the table limit has on the Martingale system, I kept the same parameters as above, except I raised the table limit to $100 million.  Lets take a look at the results:

Well look at that!  Over 10 million spins, the Martingale System would make you an estimated $23,000,000+ profit!  All you have to do to achieve these results is make sure you have a starting bankroll of hundreds of millions of dollars, and find a casino that will let you play roulette with a table limit of $100,000,000.  If you can pull this off and want to bring me along, please let me know.

Roulette System Test Conclusion

After putting the systems through the test, it looks like over the long run, none of the systems can really help you beat the casino.  However, if you can get lucky, playing with these system can show you some short term wins, you just need to know when to quit!

There are still thousands of players who swear by these systems and have indeed had success using them.  Just check out Norm Leigh’s book to see a great example of that.  Also, in extreme situations we have seen that the Martingale system can work over the long run; you just need an enormous bankroll and a casino that will let you make extraordinary bets at the roulette table.

Earlier this week I posted an article explaining how one of the most famous roulette systems in existence, the Labouchere system, is used by casino experts around the world to rake in big bucks at the casino.  Soon after the advent of the Labouchere system, a slight variation was created that caused quite a stir in the roulette community, and went on to be quite famous in its own right.

The Reverse Labouchere Roulette System

Much like the original Labouchere Roulette System, this version makes use of lines of numbers and 50/50 roulette bets to make the magic happen.  For demonstration purposes, we’ll use the same simple line that was used in the original Labouchere System article: 1  2  3  4

The big difference in this version of the system is that instead of eliminating numbers when you win your roulette bet, you add numbers.  In this way, the numbers that comprise your original Labouchere line ( 1  2  3  4 in our case ) do not equal the total you wish to win, they equal the total you are allowing yourself to lose.

Therefore, using the Reverse Labouchere System gives you a built in bankroll management tool so you never go overboard.  Furthermore, your possible winnings are only limited by reaching the maximum bet allowed on the roulette table.  With these two facets combined, the Reverse Labouchere System seems much more positive- your possible losses are limited to what you decide upfront while your winnings are only limited by the bet limit on the roulette table.

Example Reverse Labouchere System Bets

Let’s start with our example Labouchere line: 1  2  3  4

If you recall from the article on the original Labouchere System, each number represents a betting unit, or whatever the minimum roulette table bet is.  To make a bet, simply take the first and last numbers from the line, add them together, and the sum is the number of betting units you wager on the turn.

In our example, you take the first and last numbers of the line, one and four, add them together  and you get five ( 1 + 4 = 5 ).  Now simply make a bet of 5 betting units on your favorite 50/50 bet (Red, Black, Even, Odd, etc).

If you win, simply add the number of betting units you just wagered (5 in our example), and add it to the end of the Labouchere line.  After doing so, the line will look like this: 1  2  3  4  5.

If you lose, simply cross out the number on the line that you combined to make your last bet.  In our example, the numbers from the line we added to make the bet were one and four.  Simply cross out the one and the four to make the new Labouchere line.  Our new line would look like this: X  2  3  X.

Simply repeat the above steps until either all of the numbers are crossed out, or you reach the table bet limit and can make no further bets.

Why Gamblers Like The Reverse Labouchere System

As stated above, many gamblers prefer to use the Reverse Labouchere System over the original Labouchere System because it limits their losses, while leaving their potential winnings wide open.  Also, it is extremely flexible and can be adapted to any betting strategy, depending on how you construct the line.

For example, if you would like to play a longer, less risky game, simply make your line longer, with smaller numbers such as 111222.

Fi you would like to play a shorter, more agressive game, simply make the numbers larger and the line shorter such as 4 5 6 7.
