As we have covered over the last months, there has been a big push by local and federal government officials to make online gambling 100% legal again in the States. Currently, online gambling is NOT illegal in the USA, but transferring gambling funds through a US-based financial institution IS illegal.
While this has made it difficult for casinos operating within the USA to receive bets online from US citizens, this has not stopped a plethora of offshore casinos from accepting billions of dollars worth of wagers from Americans, despite the ban.
The casinos inside the US have been watching patiently as the foreign based casinos snatch up 100% market share in the online gambling market. However, knowing the stakes, they have decided to stop admiring from the sidelines and get into the game in whatever capacity they can.
Since they cannot legally start accept bets from the players themselves, they have had to side-step their way into the market gently.
One great example of this is the landmark deal recently signed between online gaming operator 888 and legendary casino operator Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment. In the deal, 888 agreed to provide all of the online casino software for the land-based casino giant, which solidifies Harrah’s intention to enter the market at some point in the near future.
Harrah’s isn’t the only big casino company trying to edge their way in, either. Prolific land-based casino, Foxwoods, has recently launched an iPhone application that allows players to play a handful of casino games for free. But that’s not all. The application gives users unparalleled access to the Foxwoods facility, offering a special phone line to the casino’s reservation and services departments, allowing for a VIP line of communication with Foxwoods.
While both of these forays into the internet gambling space don’t explicitly allow players to start gambling online through these vendors, it’s apparent that they are anxiously awaiting the day that they can legally do so.
