Top 10 Weird Gambling Superstitions

Most of us have lucky numbers, own a good luck charm or two and would never go skydiving on a Friday the 13th. But over the years gamblers have come up with some truly odd superstitions. Here’s some of the weirdest:

  1. It’s good luck to wear an article of dirty clothing when sitting down to gamble. It’s thought the dirt keeps bad luck away. For myself, this one is seldom a problem.
  2. If you ever drop a black ace on the floor while playing cards, quit the game. If you happen to drop the black ace and it falls on a mirror and breaks it, buy life insurance.
  3. Never gamble in a room with a member of the opposite sex, unless that person is playing. I make it a policy to ignore this one if that person is Natalie Portman.
  4. If you’re dealt a whole bunch of black cards in a row, a family member will die soon. Not sure if that includes in-laws too, but if it does you’ll have to decide if that’s a bad thing or not.
  5. Never put your keys on the table. Of course, this is just common sense, because most gamblers are also thieves and scoundrels (present company excluded, of course.)
  6. It’s good luck if you see a hunchback, on your way to go gambling.
  7. It’s bad luck if you are a hunchback, on your way to go gambling.
  8. At slot machines, touch the seat to see if it’s still warm, and only play if it is. Sniffing the seat is frowned upon.
  9. It’s bad luck to let someone rest their foot on your chair while gambling. If anyone tries, it’s customary to challenge them to a gunfight. (note: this was appropriate in the Wild West, but maybe not so much now.)
  10. Playing online slots or table games is considered bad luck if you are left-handed, Amish and over 7 feet tall. For everyone else, it’s always good luck. Check out all our games now.
